Siouxsie Q’s Mermaid Musical “Fish Girl” Swims North to Portland

PORTLAND, OR - Following successful runs in New York City and Los Angeles, the multi-talented Siouxsie Q is heading to Portland next month to perform her critically acclaimed mermaid musical, Fish Girl. The upcoming production hits the stage as part of the Come Inside Festival that runs from October 4-7, 2018.

“I've been working on this play throughout my entire career in the adult industry, the first songs came to me nearly the same week I first had sex for money,” explains Siouxsie Q. “While the songs and the story have stayed essentially the same, the nuances of the work has grown by leaps and bounds as my career and my relationship to the sex industry has evolved.”

Described by BroadwayWorld.com as “on the cutting edge of fantasy,” “Fish Girl” is the poignant and entertaining story of an enchanted mermaid plucked from the sea and doomed to sing for her supper. This unconventional fairy tale sings the story of a lovestruck tourist who falls into the deep end when he meets the “girl” of his dreams. The original production is a fully-realized dream on stage created by Siouxsie Q and Sean Andries. Written and performed from the perspective of a sex worker and the one who loves her, “Fish Girl” serves as an allegory for our current state of affairs and exposes the deeply personal stakes of sexual politics.

Sex Worker Rights Summit Pens ‘National Sex Worker Anti-Criminalization Principles’

LOS ANGELES, CA - Following unprecedented involvement during the International Whores’ Day actions that took place June 1-2 in numerous cities across the nation, a summit of sex workers, survivors, and advocates met late last month to discuss the next steps for the sex workers rights movement in the United States. The group published an important piece of educational information for sex workers and allies titled, National Sex Worker Anti-Criminalization Principles, now up at the APAC website.

“Sex workers must no longer be treated as though we are not an integral part of society,” said Siouxsie Q. James, Secretary of The Adult Performer Advocacy Committee. “We stand and fight in community with adjacent anti-criminalization movements that seek to rebuild our country and dismantle the ways in which we have policed and persecuted marginalized communities since our nation’s founding.”

The National Sex Worker Anti-Criminalization Principles outline a working template for the movement, advocating for people impacted by labor issues, social stigma, and criminalization. The movement condemns any attempts at restricting sex worker autonomy and self-determination.

“This document positions sex workers in a way that takes back our narratives, insisting that our voices are prioritized when it comes to policies that affect our lives,” said Cris Sardina, Director of the Desiree Alliance. Sardina runs a sex worker rights convention that chose to cancel its 2019 conference programming in light of the new laws that further criminalize the industry.

While the war on the sex industry has been raging for centuries in the United States, the catalyst for this latest wave of lobbying, litigation, media advocacy, and direct actions is a new anti-sex trafficking bill, commonly known as SESTA/FOSTA, which was signed into law in late March. Sex workers and their allies, along with trafficking survivors and advocates, have since been organizing and mobilizing to speak out about the law’s unintended, but ultimately harmful, consequences.

These communities, who are often pitted against one another in both politics and media, came together to respond to the disappearance of dozens of online resources that sex workers had once used to put valuable space, time, and scrutiny between themselves and their clients. Now unable to use the internet freely to advertise and screen, those who seek to exploit sex working individuals have more power than ever, forcing many workers to rely more heavily on potentially exploitative third parties, or turn to riskier options, including street-based sex work, where they are far more likely to experience violence from both predators and police.

“We hope that this serves as a starting point for lawmakers, journalists, advocates, and academics to better understand our community’s needs,” added Kristin DiAngelo, a sex trafficking survivor, sex worker, and the Executive Director of the Sacramento chapter of the Sex Worker Outreach Project.

Ceyenne Dorsohow founder of the Gays and Lesbians Living In a Transgender Society (G.L.I.T.S.) stated, “This was an intense drawing of emotions into a document that sets the precedent of what are now asking for and expecting of other leaders, society, and government.”

The National Sex Worker Anti-Criminalization Principles list four major points, including a general statement of purpose, recommendations for sex workers and allies, and rights of sex workers. The piece uses the 1983 Denver Principles as a template, which unequivocally declared and demanded the human rights of people living with HIV/AIDS, this document serves as a manifesto for how the sex working community will take back the narrative of exploitation and criminalization and reframe their struggle as a battle for basic human rights.

Siouxsie Q and Femme Domme Fatale Host Cannabis-Themed Speakeasy Show this Saturday

Hollywood’s Femme Domme Fatale is proud to announce their second annual 1920’s  speakeasy-themed show this Saturday at Bar Sinister. The two-act event celebrates the end of cannabis prohibition in California and includes live fire and burlesque performances, as well as a costume contest with prizes from War Party Extracts and The Stockroom.

Los Angeles, CA - Siouxsie Q and the Femme Domme Fatale crew bring their speakeasy-themed show to Bar Sinister this Saturday to celebrate the end of cannabis prohibition in California.

“Legalized cannabis consumption came to the Golden State this January, and yet with the bevy of new taxes, and the looming threat of punitive federal repercussions, it's difficult to feel like prohibition has really ended,” said Siouxsie Q. “We want to ensure that we are amplifying the voices and businesses of people who have disproportionately affected by the criminalization of cannabis, and continue to create more space for the LGBTQ community, women, indigenous folks, and people of color to succeed in the new California green rush.”

Femme Domme Fatale’s Bella Bathory has hosted the event at Bar Sinister since 2014 as a way to promote visibility of queer femmes in the Los Angeles BDSM scene. Every month she brings burlesque, fire, and kink performances to the stage.

“I am so excited to have the trifecta of vintage fetish glam, marijuana madness, and amazing fire performances for this show,” added Bella Bathory. “This is our second prohibition themed show, and this time you can expect 1920's inspired costuming and jazz music, with the addition of our favorite green friend. Adult Industry Professionals Take to NPR Airwaves to Talk #MeToo and Sex Work

CYBERSPACE — NPR’s 1A March 26th 2018 program “Missing From #MeToo — Sex Workers” led by host Joshua Johnson presented a guest panel of female professionals from the adult entertainment industry: Cris Sardina (Coordinator of Desiree Alliance) Siouxsie Q (Host of The Whorecast podcast, author, and Secretary of the Adult Performer Advocacy Committee), adult film director Jacky St. James, and queer adult filmmaker Shine Louise Houston (Founder of Pink and White Productions).

According to the segment description: “The MeToo movement has upended a status quo that tolerated sexual harassment at work. Well, at some workplaces. Exotic dancers, adult film actors and escorts still fear retribution and ridicule for speaking out. This month, two porn actors [Leigh Raven and Riley Nixon] spoke up with allegations of “misleading booking practices, excessive face-slapping and choking, and boundary violations.” In an interview with Cosmopolitan, rapper and former stripper Cardi B cast doubt on whether MeToo would be relevant for all women.” The show, which also included thoughts on Stormy Daniels’ 60 Minute interview, the recent passing in Congress of FOSTA-SESTA, and the NYC Stripper Strike, and asks: “Are women in work that relies on sexuality on the margins of MeToo?”

Covering a wide array of topics, the 47-minute segment drew comments from listeners and presented guests the opportunity to sound off about recent events, expose stigma, and dispel misconceptions related to sex work.

“Nobody should be shamed for their career choices, and making the assumption that people working in the sex industry are somehow ill-equipped at deciding their career path is lunacy,” shared Jacky St. James. “We should be protecting the rights of women everywhere.”

When asked what actions the adult industry has taken against sexual allegations, Shine Louise Houston said, “Performer advocacy has been going on for a while, just like the #MeToo movement has been here but has only recently exploded into the mainstream. Inside the sex work industry, there have been efforts; Red Light Legal and other organizations have been around for a while. This isn’t something new, but we’re going to keep persisting.” Implying that the larger visibility of #MeToo will have a positive impact on sex workers ability to be heard, she added, “Our own strives towards worker safety and consent on set will continue, and I see this movement getting stronger and stronger.”

The broadcast was met with enthusiasm from listeners and the panelists saw it as an encouraging evolution towards the adult industry taking control over the narrative about what it means to engage in sex work.

“Getting the opportunity to speak on the National Public Radio platform about such important issues felt like a huge step for the movement, said Siouxsie Q. “I’m so grateful for how respectful and welcoming the producers of 1A were with us. I hope we see more people from our community being given a seat at the table during these kinds of conversations.”

Cris Sardina agreed and on behalf of her organization stated: “Desiree Alliance thanks NPR 1A for an unbiased interview. Sex workers presenting ourselves with our views about the discussions presented today, gives the autonomy and voice back to us. As the #MeToo movement grows, conversations like these will continue to educate the public and bring sex worker experiences into the mainstream.

Siouxsie Q, Bella Bathory, and the new Femme Domme Fatale pay tribute to the women who served on the frontlines of Weinstein’s Hollywood with their upcoming one-night event, Pulp Friction.

Los Angeles, CA - Siouxsie Q will be hosting the upcoming Femme Domme Fatale show, Pulp Friction, this Saturday at Club Bar Sinister in Hollywood. The one-night event celebrates the birthday of show producer, Bella Bathory, and pays tribute to powerful Hollywood women who survived on the Miramax battlefields and brought Tarantino’s crown jewels to life.

“While mainstream actresses have historically felt the need to remind the world of how different they are from women like Bella and myself, since hearing Uma Thurman’s account of her time on set with Quentin Tarantino and behind closed doors with Harvey Weinstein, I have been haunted by how similar the predicaments we find ourselves in can be,” said Siouxsie Q. “Feeling unsafe on set isn’t something any performer should be faced with, and yet so many of us have experienced that pressure to deliver a performance, even when our safety is on the line.”

Pulp Friction is a one-night Femme Domme Fatale event featuring Bella Bathory, Siouxsie Q, Jamé Elis, and legendary adult film star Ash Hollywood. The post-Valentine’s Day show will also welcome back three-time XBIZ Award winner Michael Vegas for a breathtaking midnight fire performance.

“May the names of their abusers be swiftly forgotten and the celluloid evidence of these women’s survival be remembered as the war stories they are,” added Q. “The creative work done by each actress to embody these femme fatale archetypes is nothing short of channeling the divine, and what better way to usher in a new year for Femme Domme Fatale and a new era of accountability and action for those who use their power to exploit and abuse women with an evening of redemption rituals set in a newly renovated Tarantino universe.”

“This film is very dear to my heart as it pulls a lot of content from my real life, including issues of polyamory, sex work, and even podcasting!” said Siouxsie Q. “I play myself in a sort of alternate universe where The WhoreCast has morphed into a radio show on alternative relationships and Arabelle Raphael is my girlfriend. Siouxsie Q Campaigning for APAC Secretary

Los Angeles, CA -  Former FSC staffer, Siouxsie Q, is officially campaigning for Adult Performer Advocacy Committee (APAC) Secretary.

“APAC is an incredible asset to the adult performer community, and while they've already accomplished so much, I see tremendous potential for the future of the organization, and I hope to have the opportunity to help it grow,” said Siouxsie Q. “I care deeply about this industry and its workers. I love performing, but more than anything, I love the people that do this work. I’m proud of who we are, what we do, and at the end of the day, the diversity of voices, experiences, and perspectives that often threaten to divide us are in fact, truly what makes our community great, strong, and vibrant. We may never unite on every issue, but what we do all share is that this world sees us as second-class citizens, which is why coming together and organizing as a political force is critical for our community. I am committed to that fight.”

Siouxsie Q’s spent her first days in the adult industry at the Lusty Lady Peep Show in San Francisco where she served on the Board of Directors as the Theater Coordinator for two terms. In 2012, she created The Whorecast, a podcast showcasing the stories and voices of people in the adult industry. She used her platform as a way to speak out about Proposition 35 and Measure B.  In 2014, she started a sex column for the San Francisco Weekly called The Whore Next Door, which highlighted issues of sex worker rights, sex positivity, and the LGBTQ community.

Q’s popular book, Truth, Justice, and the American Whore, was published on the same day she accepted a position as the Director of Policy and Industry Relations for the Free Speech Coalition in 2016.

Q added, “During my time with FSC, as their first staff member who was also an active performer, I was immediately tasked with mobilizing adult film performers to attend an important Cal/Osha hearing in February of 2016, and speak out against regulations that would have seriously compromised performer health, safety, and bodily autonomy. After a solid month of social media outreach and grassroots organizing, over 100 performers showed up to the hearing and spoke their truth, imploring the Cal/Osha Standards Board to listen to the workers who would be affected by the proposed regulations. In an unexpected plot twist, the state regulators actually listened to a group of impassioned porn stars and we won!”

Q was also instrumental to the adult industry during the #NoProp60 campaign in California. She traveled across the state, visited college campuses, did live television and radio debates against the opposing side, attended Democratic and Republican party conventions, and took the streets in Hollywood to organize over 200 adult film performers to protest against Proposition 60 weeks before the election.

“There was no stopping until we had won,” Q explained. “And we did. By over one million votes. Though our campaign had been outspent nearly ten to one, we changed hearts and minds around the world based on the sheer will of our community and power of our voices. Now, I want us to never forget that when unite and fight, we can change the course of history.

“It would be a great honor to serve on the Board of Directors for the Adult Performer Advocacy Committee. I plan to use my experience from the #NoProp60 campaign to increase involvement from the performer population and grow an active community of volunteers, activists, and leaders, along with a robust network of coalition partners and resources. I want to make sure each and every APAC member is informed, involved, empowered, and supported in their choices. I humbly ask for your vote, and also promise that no matter what, I’ll never stop fighting for and serving our community.”
